It may not be the sexiest thing to think about all the chemicals in your cosmetics – we all want that flawless complexion right? But did you know that the United States hasn’t passed a major federal law to regulate the safety of ingredients used in personal care products since 1938? Not only that, but the European Union has banned over 1300 chemicals in product formulations, against the U.S.’s rather meagre attempt at 30.
Lindsay Dahl is the VP, Community Affairs and Engagement for Beautycounter which essentially means she’s taking the fight for safer beauty to Washington D.C., helping shape the company’s work as they petition Congress for more public-health protective laws on the beauty industry. We chatted to Lindsay about how we all, as consumers, can get more involved in the beauty-advocacy space.
CAN YOU OUTLINE YOUR ROLE AT BEAUTYCOUNTER AND WHAT YOUR GENERAL DAY TO DAY LOOKS LIKE?
In a nutshell I get to work across the Beautycounter organization to bring our social mission to light, with a specific focus on our advocacy work in Washington D.C. Given the fast paced nature of our company, every day is different! In any given day I will talk to leaders in D.C. about the progress of legislation to better protect our health from harmful ingredients in personal care products, engage one of our charity organizations like Stand Up to Cancer, or work with our marketing team on educational blog content.
WHAT ADVOCACY WORK ARE YOU DOING IN WASHINGTON D.C. AND WHY?
The beauty industry is one of the least regulated segments of the consumer marketplace. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t have the authority to test ingredients used in our personal care products, leaving us far behind the European Union and Canadian regulations. As a company dedicated to product safety, we feel it’s not enough to formulate safer products, we must also use our business voice to actively ask Congress for more health protective laws. It’s the right thing to do for consumers (how nice would it be to know products were actually safe before they hit the shelf) and for businesses like ours trying to bring safer products to market.
WHAT SIMPLE STEPS CAN A CONSUMER TAKE TO GET MORE EDUCATED AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
Learn about what’s in your products using tools like The Never List™ and Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database, where you can search most personal care products on the market. Second, take two minutes to take action by texting “BETTERBEAUTY” to 52886. You will receive a link in your text message that will allow you to email your Members of Congress directly and ask them for more health protective laws on our cosmetics and personal care products.
WHAT DOES ADVOCACY LOOK LIKE FOR BEAUTYCOUNTER IN THE FUTURE?
We know that consumer safety laws like safer beauty products, have the ability to cut through the Washington gridlock and are excited to see continued momentum on the hill. Senators Feinstein and Collins recently introduced their Personal Care Product Safety Act, and we’re excited to work with the House and Senate to advance the most health protective legislation possible.
LASTLY, WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE CLEAN BEAUTY PRODUCTS?
